Taylor Swift Isn’t the Economic Force. It’s Her Fans

The exact moment Taylor Swift came gliding into my life was when she released “The Man” music video. I remember it all too well. I was leading projects in a predominantly male organization. Colleagues had been quick to criticize my violations of unwritten rules regarding how women should lead—rules dictating niceties, get-in-line supportiveness, and instruction with subtlety.

“The Man,” written from an ambitious women’s perspective, tells the story of living in a world built for someone else. It is fun, lighthearted, and empowering. Swift has another song, “Mad Woman,” written from the perspective of how the patriarchy perceives these ambitious women. This song is dark, intense, and isolating. The fact that these two songs tell the story of each “patriarchal oppo…

Assassin’s Creed Mirage has very reasonable system requirements, thank god-

Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage is on the way, and the throwback AC game isn’t just cheaper than most other recent big releases (it’ll be $50), but apparently requires a heck of a lot less beef in your machine to get running.

Frankly, thank god. Steam’s hardware survey for the last month says that near all of us, barring a small percentage of Steam users on low-end machines, meet Mirage’s low minimum bar, and the vast majority of us meet or far exceed the recommended Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti.

I know that a lot of this will come down to how well-optimized this thing is for PC. Valhalla wasn’t flawless on release, to be frank, but you know what? At least this game is targeting a full graphics card generation and a half behind what (to pick the low-hanging fruit) S…

A Call of Duty- Modern Warfare 3 bug is spawning every player in the same spot, triggering a nonstop bloodbath-

Call of Duty spawns are always a little wonky on launch day, but they’re rarely as entertaining as this Modern Warfare 3 bug. Some console folk hopping into multiplayer early (presumably employing the good ol’ New Zealand region switch trick) are getting swept up in a nonstop bullet barrage as the map Quarry will sometimes spawn every player in the lobby at the same spot.

The results are a sensory nightmare of constant gunfire, blood squibs, and killstreak chimes. Not even the deliberately claustrophobic layouts of Rust or Shipment can compare to the wrath of the Quarry corner.

The culprit for the Quarry bug seems to be a specific mode: Hardpoint. Players in the comments of Reddit user…

Cyberpunk 2077’s surprise 2.1 update aims to make Adam Smasher live up to his name, adds new racing missions, and gives love interests a life with you after their questlines-

I was expecting 2.0 to be Cyberpunk 2077’s last big update—which made me pretty dang surprised and excited to hear that a follow-up patch, 2.1, actually has some good meat to its bones.

A fully-functioning metro system, a radio you can listen to on-foot, and some further gameplay tweaks—which we now know about because 2.1 is here, chooms. A full list of updates is available on the game’s website, alongside a summary video on its official YouTube channel.

First up, there’s been some changes to NPC relationships. I like a lot of the romance paths in 2077—they’re cute, interesting, and capture the utter cringe inherent in flirting extremely well. There’s one issue, though. Once you’re done with a character’s storyline, they pretty much vanish.

Diablo 4 players are clowning on its hardest boss using ungodly broken builds-

Uber Lilith. Now there’s a scary combination of syllables. It’s enough to send shivers down your spine. It’s the colloquial name for Echo of Lilith, the amped-up version of Diablo 4’s final boss that foolhardy players can take on if they feel up to the challenge. She can deal—and take—massive damage, making her a challenge that only the hardiest players can take on. It’s a landmark. It’s a milestone. It’s a final, brutal test of your build. It’s… comically easy? What?

As spotted by GamesRadar, overcoming Uber Lilith hasn’t been quite as tough as it’s cracked up to be for a player going by the name Struth Gaming. Using a Necromancer specced for Blood Orb use and the Blood Artisan’s Cuirass, Struth managed to pretty much one-shot Uber Lilith in both of her phases,…

Former Bungie lead counsel explains how the studio nailed one of Destiny 2’s most infamous leakers

If you’ve ever wondered how videogame studios determine who’s leaking their big secrets, a new Bloomberg interview with former Bungie general counsel Don McGowan offers some very interesting insights into how it’s done.

“We had a situation with a content creator,” McGowan said. “We’d done a community day where we’d brought in a bunch of community content creators and opened up a stream. One of them took photos of his computer and released those, for clout. Not on his own name, just leaked them out, so he could get clout with the websites he was leaking them to.”

McGowan explained that there were 12 streamers on the call that was leaked, so Bungie started taking a closer look at all of them. “One of them had two computers, and one day he streamed from his other PC,” he said…

Twitch unbans Donald Trump- ‘We believe there is value in hearing from Presidential nominees directly’

More than three years after suspending Donald Trump over concerns that he would use the platform “to incite further violence” in the wake of the January 6, 2001 attack on the US Capitol by his far-right supporters, Twitch has reversed course and restored his account.

“We reinstated former President Trump’s Twitch channel,” a Twitch spokesperson said in a statement provided to PC Gamer. “We believe there is value in hearing from Presidential nominees directly, when possible. Trump is now the official Republican nominee for US president.

“We continue to enforce our Community Guidelines and take necessary enforcement action when we identify violations of our rules. Twitch doesn’t have a ‘public figure policy’, meaning all channels are equally subject to our guidelines, regard…

EA’s new battlemage FPS had me at ’25-hour singleplayer campaign’-

You know that disheartening feeling when you look around and realize a thing you liked has basically evaporated? That’s how I’ve been feeling about big, bombastic shooter campaigns the past few years. Respawn moved on from Titanfall years ago, Battlefield has gone multiplayer-only, and even Arkane’s Redfall is a co-op FPS that requires a constant internet connection (for now). Call of Duty, Doom, and an eventual Stalker 2 are still carrying the torch, but let’s face it: the big-budget singleplayer FPS is on life support. Immortals of Aveum, the latest EA Original, is hoping to give it a shot of adrenaline.

Or, ya know, a healing totem or whatever. It’s a magic shooter, a subgenre that usually only pops up once in a long while (but recently twice in a short while). Ditto for …

Josh Sawyer understands why some fans are annoyed by the treatment of New Vegas in Amazon’s Fallout series, but he’s not one of them- ‘Whatever happens with it, I don’t care’-

Quite a few committed Fallout fans weren’t happy with the way the Amazon television series appeared to negate—or at least mess with—the presence of Fallout: New Vegas in the canon. But Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer isn’t one of them. In an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Sawyer said he understands why there was some confusion and “could see why some people might be aggravated or annoyed,” but he doesn’t share that feeling because it’s not his thing anymore.

“This might sound weird, but whatever happens with it, I don’t care,” Sawyer said. “My attitude towards properties that I work on, and even characters that I create, is that I don’t own any of this stuff. It was never mine. And the thing that I made is what I made.”

Sawyer acknowledg…

Redditor who posts ‘I’ve got everything I need’ alongside bare room with mattress and gaming PC ends up on CBS panel show- ‘Come on, we’ve all dated that guy’-

It’s pretty obvious what you should expect from a subreddit called r/malelivingspace, and oh man does it deliver. Reddit’s internet ubiquity is such that we sometimes forget at just what an awesome scale this site operates, and how that can transform a hobbyist or humorist niche into a huge connected community.

So to the topic of male living spaces we go and, as this is a subreddit with 1.9 million members, the posts are all over the place: there are the humblebrags, of course, alongside popular genres of picture like ludicrous gaming rooms (and weirdass plant builds), and a healthy dose of self-aware humor from most participants.

One element of the sub is posts about rather grim-looking locations, or those that play up to the sad male loner stere…

One of the best gaming laptops we’ve ever tested is down to $2,100 this Presidents’ Day weekend-

So many gaming laptops pass across our desks that sometimes it feels like we’ve seen it all before. But sometimes, just sometimes, a particular model really stands out, and this Lenovo Legion Pro 7i happens to be just that. We’ve spotted it at $2,100 at B&H photo, and at that price you’re getting our top pick for the best  gaming laptop with a huge discount for Presidents’ Day weekend.

When it comes to specs you’re getting hardware and performance that puts it up there with some of the fastest gaming laptops we’ve ever tested, and we came away very impressed in our review. The Core i9 13900HX processor at the heart of this machine is an absolute beast of a mobile CPU, and makes short work of multimedia, productivity and gaming workloads, what with its eight P-cores and 16…

Earth Defense Force 6 delivers a Helldivers 2-style call to action in its launch date announcement trailer-

Before there were the Helldivers, there was the Earth Defense Force: A die-hard unit of gung-ho go-getters who defend humanity against the insurmountable odds of a nigh-endless invasion of bugs from Planet Space. Soon those noble heroes will return to action once more: Earth Defense Force 6 is set to launch on PC and PlayStation 5 on July 25.

A great victory was won against the unknown invaders in Earth Defense Force 5, but it came at a great cost: 90% of the Earth’s population was wiped out (wow), and civilization was taken to the brink of collapse. Three years later, before we even had a chance to properly clean up that mess, it happened again—and the EDF is understandably eager to put some new recruits on the front line.

It’s less ironically fascist than Helldivers …

Starting at just $120 these are the two best cheap gaming monitors I’d buy myself right now-

A good monitor will last you many years but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a small fortune on getting the largest OLED display you can get. Pick the right budget gaming monitor and you’ll have a screen that will be more than good enough for nearly every PC gamer.

One of the best cheap gaming monitors I’d buy myself is the ASRock Phantom Gaming PG27FF1A for just $120 at Newegg. It has a 27-inch IPS panel, with a resolution of 1080p and a maximum refresh rate of 165 Hz. There’s even support for FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate, to ensure smooth, tear-free gaming.

Tucked underneath the panel’s edge are two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.2, and a 3.5 mm headset socket. While those aren’t the latest versions, they’re more than good enough for 1080p 165 Hz.

There’s two types of news in Frostpunk 2- bad news, and good news that you slowly realize is actually bad news

As Steward of New London in Frostpunk 2, I’m a bundle of nerves. Maintaining balance in the frozen city is impossible by design: half the citizens hate me because of the law I just passed and the other half is about to hate me for the law I’m planning to pass next. Diverting resources to solve one problem means two new problems pop up in its place, and even success, like when I finally have a big enough food industry to support my population, is quickly countered by failure: while I was building that new food district, 177 people froze to death.

Apart from the angry icons at the top of the screen warning of the plunging temperature and rising crime and spread of disease in my city, there are other angry icons popping up to point out other problems, like which districts have been…

Win a Remnant 2-styled Stream Deck, Game Codes, and a cool hat to celebrate the launch of The Awakened King DLC-

With the launch of Remnant 2’s first DLC, The Awakened King, Gunfire Games has partnered with Gearbox Publishing and Elgato to choose five lucky travellers, who’ll receive a bundle of prizes via a giveaway on the PC Gamer forums.

I’ve recently had a blast playing through Remnant 2’s DLC, so I can highly recommend entering for the code alone. The Awakened King adds a whole new adventure through the world of Losomn—new areas, bosses, items, weapons, and a new Ritualist archetype.

Thanks to Gunfire Games, Elgato, and Gearbox Publishing, you’ll be able to enter a giveaway for a chance of winning a prize. Well, three prizes, actually: A Remnant 2-branded Elgato Stream Deck with a custom faceplate design, a Remnant 2 Ultimate edition key (which gives you access to The …

Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe is now ‘properly rolling’ as Games Workshop finalizes deal with Amazon Studios-

2022 did not end particularly well for our favorite hunk of burning PC gamer Henry Cavill. After leaving The Witcher to return to the big screen as DC’s top-dog superhero, the Superman project fell apart, his old job was gone, and he was very suddenly looking for something to do. But there was one bright spot: After all of the above had unfolded, Games Workshop confirmed that Cavill was set to head up, and star in, a Warhammer 40,000 “cinematic universe.”

In case you’d forgotten, Cavill is a big 40K fan. He spent time in Covid quarantine painting Warhammer miniatures; he talked about it during Netflix’s WitcherCon in 2021; he once interrupted an interview to explain the difference between Warcraft and Warhammer; he even had a cameo of sorts in the Total War: Warhammer 2 DLC The Wa…

Today’s Wordle hint and answer #753- Wednesday, July 12-

Improve your daily Wordle with our helpful tips, dig yourself out of a rut with a helpful clue written especially for the July 12 (753) game, or take a cheeky peek at today’s answer—it’s only a single click away, after all.

Well, this Wordle certainly took some time. I eventually uncovered a few letters, but they refused to behave and for a worryingly long while I wasn’t sure what to do with them. In these situations, all you can do is stick at it and keep guessing until a vital green or precious spark of inspiration hits, so I kept on trying until today’s Wordle answer revealed itself.

Wordle today- Hint and answer #921 for Wednesday, December 27-

You’re now just one click away from winning the December 27 (921) Wordle—the answer’s ready and waiting if you need it. You’re also in the right place if you’re after a tailor-made clue for today’s game too, if you’d like a bit of help without being handed the solution on a plate. Whatever Wordle support you need, we’ve got it.

I soon found myself staring at (almost) all the right letters in all the wrong places after two guesses this morning, which usually means I’m either in for a very long game of “Where the heck does this go?” or I’m just one more attempt away from a win. Luckily for me, today’s Wordle was the latter. Hopefully tomorrow’s game will be just as simple—hopefully.

Europa, the gorgeous indie platformer about the only human awake on a terraformed moon, is delayed-

Puzzle-platformer Europa has associate editor Ted Litchfield excited, and for good reason: It looks and sounds fantastic, and the demo did not disappoint. But the April 16 release date that was announced at the end of 2023 isn’t going to happen—instead, it’ll probably be out sometime this summer.

I say “probably” because that’s what developer Helder Pinto said in the delay announcement: A new release date hasn’t yet been nailed down.

“Europa began as a side project I created alone, and in the years since it has grown more than I ever could have dreamed, though we are still working in the evenings and weekends around our day jobs,” Pinter wrote. “I’m very proud of what we’ve done together—which is why I can’t stand the thought of releasing the ga…

WoW’s new specialisation deals damage by buffing everyone else, so of course it’s getting booted from groups for ‘low DPS’-

The Augmentation Evoker came to World of Warcraft with patch 10.1.5 last week, bringing a whole new type of DPS to the game. For the uninitiated, this new spec works by buffing party members to bump their damage numbers rather than melting faces itself. It’s comparable to the Dancer from Final Fantasy 14 or the Bard from Dungeons & Dragons—basically, when an Augmentation Evoker’s in the group, everyone does better.

So obviously they’ve been getting kicked out of groups for no reason. A reddit thread on the World of Warcraft subreddit emerged with a compilation of screenshots from the Wyrmrest Temple discord, community server for Evokers. Typing “!augdps” in the augmentation channel will have Carlygos, the server’s friendly bot, drop an ever-evolving montage of people mis…

Wipeout’s now remastered and playable in a browser, coder tells Sony to ‘either let it be, or get a real remaster going’-

Just over a month ago we reported on the sudden re-emergence of a shined-up PC version of 1995’s Wipeout, a launch title for Sony’s first PlayStation and a game that set the tone for the entire platform: cool, slick, and fast as hell. It came from an anonymous hero who, under the Github account Wipeout Phantom Edition, released an enhanced PC source port of the original Wipeout under that subtitle of Phantom Edition: “It uses game data from the PlayStation version and is much more comparable to the PlayStation version than the official PC port” (which I haven’t played but is apparently not a great port).

This was based on a 2022 leak of the original game’s source code from Forest of Illusion, and the Phantom Edition modder wasn’t the only person with their eye on it.…
